The Truth About Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare

Hyaluronic acid has become a popular ingredient in skincare products over the past few years. Many of you may be using products that contain it, but there’s a common misconception about what hyaluronic acid actually does.

Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making your skin feel smooth and bouncy. However, many people mistakenly believe that hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin. It does not! Instead, hyaluronic acid draws moisture from the surrounding tissue, meaning it takes water from your skin and holds it on the surface. This creates the illusion of hydration, but true skin hydration comes from using a toner daily or applying a sheet mask with toner.

Without regular use of toner to hydrate your skin daily, or sheet masks with toner, when you stop using hyaluronic acid, your skin may feel dry. This is because hyaluronic acid doesn’t provide true hydration. While it can be beneficial for sensitive or reactive skin by providing a buffer and reducing intense sensitivities, it should not be relied upon for hydration.

If you are using too much hyaluronic acid, I recommend taking a break from that product and evaluating your skin’s true condition.
